Shudder on acceleration

Recently my '85 Spree has started to shudder between speeds of 1-8mph when I start from a standstill. It really seems to be the engine that is shuddering - almost dying at times.

Also, around the same time this problem started I noticed that the Spree would rev a lot higher when standing still.

I did take it for a slightly bumpier-than-normal ride just before this started. Could this have shook something loose?

Any ideas?

Thanks, Ben

My 86' is doing the same thing. It comes and gos. Mine only has 500 miles on it but I think its the clutch sticking.

Could somebody please explain to me what a slipping clutch does. Does a slipping clutch normally just cause the bike's speed to shudder or can it actually make the whole engine shudder violently?

Is fixing a slipping clutch a simple repair?

Could be your belt is stretched from wear or just being old and needs to be replaced. It could also be your clutch. Either way you will need an impact wrench to either change the belt or replace the clutch. You have to take your kickstart lever cover off to get access to the clutch and the belt.
Its not difficult to do either procedure if you know what you are doing and have that impact wrench. You need the impact to take clutch nut off.
