All of a sudden my 86NQ50 decides that it needs to idle super high. or maybe it's not even idling. all i know is if i release the throttle, i'll go 10mph. i have to really hold it back... is my throttle stuck in the carb?

It sounds like it could be. One way to find out is the obvious. Take it apart and see if it slides all the way down like it should. Give it a shot of WD40 when its apart to lubricate it. Even carb cleaner sprayed on it and down in where it slides would not hurt. It could also be a worn out or stuck throttle cable. Another cause could be your idle screw is set way too high.

so check this out.... it was my carb for sure:
the two screws holding the carb to the intake were a full cm out!! there was a very visible gap and the carb was basically just hanging there!!!! how the heck did it still run like that?!
anyway, easy fix. guess i check those screws a bit more often. is it a bad idea to use a low level loctite on those screws?

It would not hurt as long as the carb can still be removed without a whole lot of effort. They really should not come loose though if tightened enough. It also would not hurt to install a fuel filter on the gas line coming from the petcock to the carburetor. I say this because it would help from getting small debris and particles of dirt into the carburetor. It helps from having to always clean the carburetor which these little scooters are known for.

high idling is caused by a vacuum leak. Some where air is getting into the engine besides the carb. Start it up and spray carb cleaner around all the intake areas. if there is a leak, it will suck it in and the idle will change.
