Won't go above 15-20 mph

It runs great but has no top end. I checked to see if there was a restrictor on the clutch and didn't see such a thing. The belt looks brand new. Any ideas guys?

Try adjusting your air screw and clean the air filter.

Do a plug chop
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

Are you sure that air screw is adjusted right?

I think I found the problem...I have an Iowa model elite. I took off the plate on the back with an R stamped on it. It had three screws holding it. Is this a restrictor for the clutch? I read a how to on this thought I would try it...I have yet to test it out though.

Reading the plug requires fully warming up the engine by running it for about 10 minutes... Then making a top speed full throttle run for a half mile or more, then killing the motor and stopping and pulling the spark plug on the spot.
That is called.."Doing a plug chop".

When doing the "plug chop"... It is important to chop the throttle and turn the engine off with the switch or key and then pull over to stop... You don't want the engine to idle... that will change the plug color.

You can wait till the plug cools... the color won't change.

The color of a plug on a correctly running engine is a light brown or tan color.
Lighter than that means danger of a piston seizure.
Darker than that is OK... But real dark or wet looking means your main jet in the carb is too big (too rich)... pull it out and look at the number on the side and buy the next size smaller (leaner).

Note... To get an accurate plug reading takes a fairly new plug... a plug with 2 years of crud on it will never really show the true color (or heat) the engine is running at.

Won't running at full throttle for a half mile or more blow up a 2 stroke? My exhaust is not restricted, and the plug is dark black but not wet. I am having a intermittent miss only at high rpm's. I changed the coil and cdi with no changes in results. What would my next step be?

only if you don't have any oil to lube the piston..I ride my stock elite back and forth from school which is done full throttle so I can go 30mph in a 45mph and thats four miles there...four miles back

dark black means your getting too much oil..adjust your throttle needle to the next leanest setting and try that..if its better but still not perfect do it again(if there is another notch) and check it..if it seems fine do another plug chop with a new plug to see how it is running then

Okay...I found out why it is going so slow. The clutch pack towards the rear by the rear tire are shot. You can see where they turned purple on the cover so they must be slipping when they go to engage. I am going to change clutches and that should get my top speed back.
