Post by CRXDrew »

Hey guys I joined this forum because I'm looking for a scooter for my long time girlfriend. Hope I can be of some technical assistance on the board. I have a lot of experience with high revving japanese engines in both motorcycles and cars... with a particular interest in turbocharging Hondas for use on the drag and roadcourse race tracks.

I do a lot of engine building... and body work/painting for spare cash.. atleast I used to before college started getting more intense.

Here are my toys... hope to be picking up a spree in the near future.

So I noticed that there are a lot of Michigan ppl on this board. Are scooters big in MI or something? I'm from the Chicago burbs and go to school at the University of IL.

Welcome to the site man, i love to see people like you,how have amazing bikes and cars , go out and buy a spree. i get tired of people who have crappy cars or trucks make fun of me for riding a moped. when im reality some people with badass cars still have mopeds or want to get them for fun.
i got my 92 elite from a person who owned a supercharged 01 Trans Am. he ended up selling it because he didnt want to pay to fix it.

but yeah, sweet car, amazing bike, cant wait to see your moped

part of the reason is if you noticed the maker of the site, 'noiseguy' is his name, also added a forum for the Michigan Moped Mafia, alot of people searching for that come across this.
mopeds in Michigan are as common as moped every were. Hawaii is were mopeds are huge

Yea there is nothing wrong with a moped and a 49cc moped at that. I joke with my gf that I will sell the my Z1000 and just buy an army of scooters. You just can't beat the practical nature of a small scooter especially when your other options are on the overkill side... riding 3 miles to class spitting fire out of the Z is cool for only so long.

I noticed a few pics with MMM stickers. Pretty cool stuff. I've heard about the HI scooter scene. Its pretty nutty in the Philippines too, I got some cousins with hopped up scooters.

Trust me my next scooter will be overhauled to tip top shape. I would like to find a cheap junker but its hard to find those with titles. Instead I'll have to buy one that "runs good" only to tear it down completely anyway.

i dont know were you live but check your state laws, im Michigan you dont have to have a title just a bill of sale.
i myself im trying to get a 94+ dio motor to put on my 92 elite. 94-01 honda elites (dio's) motors have more parts available and can go way faster with few changes.

when you get a moped i recommend http://www.Vtcycles.com. they haven't updated there site in years, just call them. they have great parts, great prices, and they know what will help you the most. i got my parts from them and don't regret it one bit

I picked up an 88 SB50p, one that was recently listed in the classifieds section here. Keep an eye out for a comprehensive thread on bringing new life to the little 50 :).

Here is a teaser: This is progress after a few days... keep in mind I'm at school in an Apt with only the tools I brought in the back of the rex (which I guess is more extensive than most people's entire garage... but yea.. haha)

Before- sorta bad paint, orange, dirty, missing and mismatched bolts etc
Image

During- Duplicolor 500degree engine enamel... best paint I've used... on any surface
Image

Currently- only thing left is to recover the seat. I may have time to do this tomorrow.. got to coordinate with a girl i know who has a sewing machine on campus.
Image

Bumper paint- easily durable enough for daily use. black > gray.
Image

The lucky lady who is getting this scooter for our 5 year anniversary. (haha and my old bike being transported inside a CRV)

Rims are now a satin black. I'm going to take them off again and paint on a red lip. I might even consider buying new tires since they are so cheap. (Unlike the my Z.... 1 rear tire is like $150+ :x )

It runs well, I can thank Justin (dukemartini) for that. I may end up rebuilding it down the line but for now stock is perfect. And it would be nice to build it at home in my garage when I can give it a proper cleaning and assembly. I did however change the fuel lines just as a precaution a few bucks here and there buys a lot of reassurance.
how bad was it getting rid of those wrinkles in the paint?
Not too bad.... cleaned, sanded, degreased, sanded, primed, sanded, degreased, painted. Looks pretty mint. Again if I was at home I could have converted my garage into a booth like when I painted my car but rattle can is an acceptable substitute... for now.
ps; is this the same type of paint you use?
Yea something like that. I am pretty picky with rattle can brands. I prefer duplicolor.

Its just a generic red. Its a bit darker than the Kawasaki Passion Red on my bike. Its actually more similar to a Honda powersports red... which is nice. Next time I see my buddy with his CBR I'll compare.

I think the key to older vehicle restoring, short of replacing black plastics is to get them black again with paint. Its not entirely evident that all the black plastic including the dash, rear sig assembly, reflector holders, air box, fan shroud, and rear fender are all painted bumper black.

Also the luggage rack, and exhaust were hit with black paint. (BBQ grill paint for the exhaust)
