bicycle gears on a chain driven moped

ok so i got my project moped running but its slow off the line( you almost have to push it to get it to go). i got talking to my friend jake and he reminded me about our electric scooters we had when we were like 13. back then one of the things we tried was to put a bike gear shifter on it. of course we were to young and clue-less so it failed.
i know nothing about chain driven mopeds. my project is chain driven but it has a cover like a belt driven one. my question to you all is do you think its posable to put the bike shifter in the front part of the case shown in picture 2?

i know it would have to stick out some so i might have to cut the front of the case off but then comes the problem with how to start it. i could put it in back but i think the clutch is back there. i never took it off and checked. any one done this? any one done anything like this? any tips for trying this? any facts about chain driven moped? anything helps

that would be really interesting but it doesn't seem like you would need all of the gears that bike has, maybe only a few.

thats what i would want. like 3, take off, mid range, high speed.
the only down side about having 3 is changing gears would take forever.
try riding a bicycle and get going good . now change 3 gears up or down. notice how long it takes to tick over. if the motor was reved high it would just spin and not click in gear

Why not save your money and buy an engine that can be built for speed, you have a brain but only common sense is reality
