17hp OHV 4 stroke mower problems

Post by Kenny_McCormic »

Got a newer mower as the last one blew its drive shaft and a $100 used mower beats buying over $100 in parts to fix the old one. Anyways it mowed our 1 acre yard without an problems then we started it a few ours later to move some logs and it was hydrolocked so i removed the sparkplug and cranked it over to blow over a cup of gas out of it. It ran fine and the logs got moved. To fix tis magical flooding problem we simply pinched off the fuel line with a pair of vice grips.

Up until this point the engine ran great started easy and the oil remained a nice honey color. Today i started it up to mow the lawn it took me a good 5 minutes to start the motor and then i had a very hard time keeping it running for the first 30seconds. I dropped the deck and engaged it the engine started blowing blue smoke everywhere i ran it like this for 40ft and shut it down which made a huge cloud of white smoke. the plug was black and oily and the oil was noticeably darker, there was also smoke in the crankcase .

What do you guys think happened? I think it might have blown a ring.

Its not a blown ring and the oil isnt getting darker the oil now smells like gas so i think oil in the gas (* piece of s*** carb!)is just making it act weird im just gonna keep feeding it oil and see if it stops.

You have gas leaking into the crank, probably through the carb. Gas in oil will darken it and make it appear fizzy when its hot. Be carful you can roast the rings running it like that.

the gas leak thing is because it has an electric shutoff valve on the carb and it gets stuck open sometimes. so we just pinch the line when its not in use and yes its a briggs. Has some serious blow by, you an hear air excaping around the rings when you turn it over by hand but it still starts up and runs good minus the oil burning which isnt as bad with the air box cover off giving a little more flow so its less likely to suck oil.

Pulled head today, rings fine, bore still has factory crosshatching on it, head gasket blew out between the cylinder wall and the pushrod cavity boosting crank pressure till it was blowing all its oil down the intake, with the breather off it was literally blowing exhaust out the breather.
