I just got an 84 spree. I am ready to just smack it with a hammer a couple hundred times. This is my problem. My battery is charged. It will will crank but wont turn over. I cleaned out the carb and changed the plug checked the resistance on the bystarter which was 4.7 checked the flow of the fuel valve. set the carb to what the manual said to 1 7/8 out and it just seems that there is nothing. But i do spray some starter fluid in the carb and voom it starts and the quickly dies. I checked the spark and to be quite honest i don't know what a weak spark looks like. It looks like a dim flicker. thats with the new plug the old one i couldn't see anything. so please help My daughter is waiting for her new toy and her dad is ready to quit.

I had a very similar situation. Check the cylinder for compression, the rings may be shot. If your compression is good its probably the reed valves. Compression should be 110 or more. Good luck, Ed

compression dont have to be that high. a good way to check is to remove the spark plug and put some oil in the hole(about a cap full or so) and kick it about 5 times with the spark plug out, put spark plug in and see if it starts.
if it does its more the likely the rings, it if does check the reed valve for a gap

Try turning your drain screw out on the carburetor and see if gas comes out. Tell us what happens and we will go from there.

yes i did and gas pours out. i got it to idle for about 2 mins but then clunked out. that was after a friend of mine told me to pour some gas right in the carb i did thru the air intake opening.

Now the question is does the gas eventually stop coming out of the drain opening or does it just keep coming out and would not stop until the tank is empty? If so your vacuum valve is stuck open and is probably causing your carb to flood out.

will it stop or keep going?

The gas should stop draining out after a little while until just your carburetor is empty of gas. If gas just keeps coming out of the drain opening and will not stop even after you feel the carburetor should have been empty by then, you have a problem. Gas is only supposed to be allowed to enter the carb when the engine is running. It works on a vacuum through your vacuum tube and gas valve.

clean the carb again just run it ( I put 100miles and at least 6 carb cleanings on mine before it ran right)
