Better acceleration for an Elite S 50

Hi, I have a 1996 Honda SA50P that does 25mph.
I don't really want to go faster, but I'd like to get better acceleration.
Is there a way to get more power without increasing the top speed?
How much would this affect the life of the engine?

Thanks,
Matt

this is the reason your elite is slow. honda did these things so the honda elite so it would by law be a 'Moped'

removing the thing in the pipe will help take off. the front pulley helps top speed. If you want to get better flow all around, drill a few holes in the air filter box. Better flow helps take off , and posably top speed by 3mph or so.
although doing these is free you might want to spend 5$ at honda and get an one size bigger jet for the carb. it will help your motors life. Doing all 3 you are looking at hitting about 35 or so with really good take off.

I have the Same moped. I did both those mods and mine goes good.

also welcome to the site.

they are refering to that plate being on the clutch yet it appears that that peice he has off is the variator?

front clutch is just another way of saying variator.
taking that off increases top speed. but if mattflash just wants take off not top speed he should just do the tail pipe mod.

Thanks the help!
It sounds like removing the restrictor in the exaust will help my take off.
I'm wondering if I should consider buying the R1 performance exaust off ebay, so if someday I want to return my Elite to stock, I'll have the original part.

Will installing one of these exaust systems have the same effect as removing the restrictor?

Thanks again,
Matt

heres the thing with after market pipes. most of them will bolt right up but there not made for the stock cylinder. Almost all aftermarket tail pipes are made to be use with 70cc bore kits. they have less back compression to let more flow though. witch is a good thing but with the stock cylinder it lets to much.
With no back pressure your motor will run like crap. Thats why i would stay with the stock pipe just remove the washer. If you dont mind me asking, is there a reason you want to stay slow if you could go faster for free?

You're right, I don't really want spent $120+ on a new exaust system.
The reason I was thinking about it was because its technically illegal in Massachusetts to remove any restrictors in a moped. If I ever(and I'll probably never) want to sell my Honda, I'd want it to perform as stock.

here is another place that tells how to fully unrestricted it.
heres the thing. You have one of the best mopeds you can get. 94-01 honda elite 50's has a Dio motor. the Dio motor is highly mod able and can hit speeds of 75mph with bore/carb/pipe/gears. if you spend like 1000$ on it you can hit speeds of 120+mph but thats just stupid on something like this.

If you want to stay in the moped community this is the moped to have. i think later on after i get a car im going sell my other mopeds but im keeping my dio. Taking off the restrictions is something that is quick and give your moped much more power. If my moped only did 25 i might think about selling it, but now it hits 35-38mph with good take off. its so much fun i wouldn't think of selling it.

But hey, to each his own. Like i said the tail pipe mod will give you the power you want with out increasing top speed. The link i have at the top of this post tells you have to unrestricted it the rest of the way. all can be put back on if you decide to sell it later on.

technically by removing the restrictor on the front clutch and drilling the exhaust your moped is still stock

thats true, even an air box mod, its still stock. no new parts.

very simply tuning your ped with different weights, springs, derestricting your pipe and a new variator should get you up to speed. You also might want to rejett. Fooling with the airbox is a way more tricky application that most people would think it is. you can easily make it run leaner with modding the airbox. My stock dio motor with only rejetting and a tune up of springs, weights did 51 mph. this motor stock did come with 10.1 gears instead of 11.1 in the USA dio motors.
Good luck and have fun

I have been curious where could I pick up a 10:1 or 9:1 gears? Since, I have the dio motor and going to be picking up a new variator and was thinking of changing gears as well. Since that is the simplest mods I can do right now.

Thanks

you can either go to lighter weights or stiffer clutch springs, all 94-02 elites came with 12:1:1 to retool would cost alot of money, before you drill any holes in the air filter take off the cover and look at the plugged side of the intake which needs to cut out  and if you do the other drerstrictions its 53mph! old school!

53? bull crap. if its fully unrestricted with a gear change and High speed variator.
