85 honda spree won't start

I rode it around the corner to the store. Stopped and started again to get home. It had been working normally before this and a couple of hours later it won't start. Plenty of compression with finger over hole. I put in a new sparkplug and put in a capful of gas and it started for a split second burning off the fuel and then dieing. It has fuel flowing from the bowl to the carburator, the bystarter doesn't work to start it when removed as i've heard it might to check for a faulty one. The strangest thing is that it makes the same starting noice when the sparkplug cap is off as when it is on. It sounds like it wants to turnover, but it just can't so I'm thinking fuel, but the sparkplug cap thing is throwing me off. Thanx for your help.
