first spree ride

Post by simihondajoe »

just came back from my first actual ride on the spree. GOt this one for free when someone left it at the shop. My place is right near a great canyon road with a crazy steep first hill. First impression, the spree needs more power! wont pull my 150 pounds up the hill. Its an 84, about 4500 miles on it. everything stock except for all the blinkers and the rear rack are missing. I'm thinking I'll port it and deck the head first, cheapest stuff to do, then see what it will do.

Oh yeah, first post here.

I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

Smoothing out the intake pipe helps (its incredible poorly machined, you can really call it a transition stock), you can take up to .020 from the head. Add a piece of plastic to the fan shroud so it grabs more air and forces it in. At that milage it might be time for a a rehone and new rings, run a compression tester on it 115 is the best and less than 90 on one of these means rebuild.

Welcome to the site.
Dont mind kenny, he always hits the backspace key after posting instead of clicking edit. On phpbb like this that turns into 2 posts (such as above)
"Its not what you ride, its that you ride"
1996--------Honda Elite S-
1991--------Tomos Targa-
And a Bunch of other bikes.

If you take .020 off the head will it need high octane fuel? we had a moped that required 110 race fuel and I really dont want to repeat that haha.

I noticed the terrible intake manifold shape, i've seen metalshop project ashtrays with better casting work. Figured I'd clean that up, match port the cylinder and just generally smooth everything out, timing seems okay for my goals so I probably wont move any ports. I'm ordering all the new gaskets today so I can get this thing freshened up. I just looked up rings and they are really cheap so i'll probably throw a new set in there while im at it. How much of an improvment is putting the domed piston out of the later model engine into an early scoot like my 84?

I dont think it will need high octane fuel, the cheapest pump gas you can get should work. When mix matching parts like that along with a milled head watch your clearances. http://www.hondaspree.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2584

ok finally got off my fat duff and did the porting yesterday, just some shape cleaning really, the intake manifold was the most dramatic porting I did. Worked on the exhaust port for a while then, my dremel died. Borrowed a friends and finished smoothing everything. fought with the rings for awhile and got it all back together. It was raining and crapy so I didnt ride it yet but its clear today so I think I'll take the little scoot out.
