87 elite grounding problem....

What would cause my 87 elite 50 to run sporadically until i have the rear brake lever held against the metal that has it pinned in place?

The scooter will be very hard to keep at a constant speed and won't go over 20ishmph. I can hold the brake lever up just enough that it's touching the metal thats holding it in place and the scooter works flawlessly...

I'm no expert and it might just be a fluke but it has to do with the brake lever...and i would guess some sort of grounding issue.

Where is this brake lever switch and what exactly does it do?

I have a spare 86 spree that if the parts the same i can swap it out to see if thats the problem. I just don't know what it is...

Its suposed to but right up agaisnt the bracket when you let it go, your brake cable is junk.

Yeah i haven't replaced it on this one but i don't think it's junk. The brake does snap back against the bracket that holds it but for some reason it just run perfect it i hold it (up). Since it's pinned in it only moves maybe a 1/4cm but just enough to have it touch the metal with a strong connection i guess.

maybe the brake is set too tight? Try lossening the adjustment nut a few turns and try again.

If the brake doesn't return all the way, it will cause this condition.
May be a binding brake cam or sticky cable.
Both must be checked, cleaned or replaced.
Very common on 20+ year old scoots.
