hi, I just bought two 84 honda sprees, one starts and runs fine but the other doesnt start.

some of the problems ive noticed.

1. the starter pinion does not extend out far enough when the starter is turning it over. could this be a bad pinion? bad starter? both? even when I hook the battery up to a charger it doesnt make any difference.

2. the engine has WAY more compression than the other scooter. i took the plug out and was able to turn it over easier but it puked out a bunch of very oily gas.

If I extend the pinion gear out by hand out to that pully gear it will not turn over.

what should I try to get this thing running?

Clean and lubricate the starter pinion, clean and grease ALL electrical connections, gut the relay and check it for corrosion. The oil in your crank is causing the higher compression.

thanks, I was able to get it started after pumping A TON of oil out of the motor. I found a bad seal on the oil pump shaft that was allowing massive amounts of oil to drain down. the previous owner hadnt ridden it in a long time before i got it, but he apparently kept adding oil. anyways, after I got as much oil out as I could by removing the oil pump and spark plug and turning the motor over manually I was eventuall able to get it started. Ive ran it for about 10 minutes at varying throttle positions and this thing is dumping massive amounts of oil out of the exhaust. Should I just run it wide open and hope that it eventually stops? it is obviously loading the plug pretty bad with all this oil coming through, so I was thinking I would just run it like this until it stopped blowing oil and then replacing the plug.

If this plan has any flaws please let me know so I dont create any more problems for myself!

After you get it running well, take the exhaust pipe off and cook it in a really hot fire to burn out all the gunk from burning all that oil.
