87 variator rollers

i am in the process of rebuilding a 87 elite 50S and when i got to the clutches yesterday i found that the rollers all had flat spots, multiple flat spots on the same roller some nearly worn down to the to the metal. i ordered new weights from the dealer, but my question is when i removed my bad ones, the entire back side of the variator where the rollers are was covered in grease, so much that you could not see the rollers or anything for that matter. the scooter drove just fine prior to this, no surging, normal upshift. we then pulled my brothers and the inside of his was dry. are the rollers suposed to be greased? and if so how much what kind is recomended. also, what is the effect of having flats spots? far as i can tell, mine accelerated/shifted fine.

They run better dry or near dry, honda packed them in greases to slow them down.

yeah. your 100% right.

As for what flat spots do. They just plain are bad. Pending on how bad they are, the flat spots will stop them from rolling open any more taking a few mph off your topspeed.
But most of the time its just makes your take off a little choppy.

just installed new factory rollers and i can not believe the difference. picked up 3-4 mph and my hole shot is much better. anyone know how often these should be checked or how long they last. based the total lack of maintenance from the previous owner, i would not be surprised if my rollers has 5200 miles on them.
