My 87 se50 sat outside for 10 years before i got it and the gas tank is covered in surface rust on the inside.
has anyone had any experience with coating the inside of a gas tank and how hard easy was it? i know this is a fairly common thing done to motorcycle tanks but i have no experience with it.

well one trick is to go get like 5 gals of gas and some new bolts and nuts and put a gal in and some bolts close it swish around for 5 min and repeat 4 or 5 times and it will be good

Unless the nuts/bolts make a spark... Noiseguy did a post on how to clean a gas tank out.

Any idea where that post is? I've done a couple of searches and can't find anything.

Man that is an OLD post. Technique worked great for me, though, and the tank's still clean after a few years.
I've read up on tank coating... unless you have holes through the tank (and can't get a new one) it's just not worth it... carb gets filled up with tank sealer instead of rust.

Duker,
I just de-rusted my tank with a product called Evapo-Rust. You can purchase it online or at most Autozone stores. It works real well and can be reused. When you are done using it in your tank pour it through a coffee filter back into the container to save it for future. Be sure to use a good degreaser before you let the Evapo-rust sit for a few days.
