when i bought my spree the carb and such was taken off. I keep hearing about checking the gap in your reed and cleaning you carb if it hasnt run in awhile.

What is a reed, and where are they?

Take the carb off. Just to the left of where the carb used to be, there is a metal elbow held onto the motor with 2 bolts the same size as the ones that held the elbow to the carb. Pull those out. Then, pull the elbow out. After that, pull the piece of plastic out, carefully. The very thin piece of metal attached to the plastic is the reed. When you pull it out, it should be completely closed, that is, all surfaces must be sealed to the plastic. If there is any gap, the pressure from the exhaust will leak back into the carb and make the engine run like crap.

When there is pressure inside the cylinder, the reed should be shut so that the exhaust goes out the easiest path, the exhaust port to the muffler. When there is a vaccuum in the cylinder, the reed moves such that new gas, air, and oil can get in. It's a one-way valve.

Before you take it down, get some new gaskets.
You won't be able to save the ones you remove.
It will save time, waiting for new ones.
