Basic questions from New Spree Owner

Post by Bruck15 »

Hi, I├óÔé¼Ôäóm a happy new owner of a 1986 honda spree. After about 6 months of looking I was finally able to pick one up at a garage sale for $200! The scooter works pretty well but I have a few basic questions:
a) I was told the oil pump is broken and to mix the oil with the gas├óÔé¼┬ªCan anyone provide me the type of oil I should be using, and what the mix ratio is? Can I mix the oil straight into the gas tank or will I need to pre-mix in a gas can? Also, I have found a few oil pumps for sale on ebay. How hard is it to replace an oil pump, assuming I have limited mechanical abilities?
b) The scooter doesn├óÔé¼Ôäót idle very well at stops, and I am therefore required to keep the throttle slightly on while braking to prevent it from dying. I have searched through the technical forum and it seems to be a common problem. Can someone please tell me where the ├óÔé¼┼ôIdle screw├óÔé¼┬Ø is so that I can try adjusting that?
c) The scooter accelerates from a stop very slowly. It goes only a few miles per hour for about 5-10 seconds and then it starts to kick in and go. Is this just the way spree├óÔé¼Ôäós are or is there something wrong? If so, any ideas?
d) The previous owner told me the electric starter worked however, the battery was low and therefore was not working at the time. All the lights, and horn seem to work fine on the battery. Would that indicate that the electric start doesn├óÔé¼Ôäót work, or does the battery need to have a fuller charge to use the electric start then the lights/horn? Kick start works fine, but it would be nice if the electric starter worked too!
e) Does anyone know any good shops in Seattle to have a tune-up done? How much should a tune-up run for a spree?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

How hard is it to replace an oil pump, assuming I have limited mechanical abilities? 1 bolt, inspect oring, grease it up and put it in, hook the lines up (best to buy new ones) and bleed them, fire it up on a small amount of premix in the gas tank with the pump unhooked form the manifold, should drop 1 every ten seconds or so, might take a few mins of running to get the last bit of air out.
b) The scooter doesn├óÔé¼Ôäót idle very well at stops, and I am therefore required to keep the throttle slightly on while braking to prevent it from dying. I have searched through the technical forum and it seems to be a common problem. Can someone please tell me where the ├óÔé¼┼ôIdle screw├óÔé¼┬Ø is so that I can try adjusting that? first clean the carb, the idle speed setting is the phillips head screw on the carb.
c) The scooter accelerates from a stop very slowly. It goes only a few miles per hour for about 5-10 seconds and then it starts to kick in and go. Is this just the way spree├óÔé¼Ôäós are or is there something wrong? If so, any ideas? clean the carb, do a plug chop, if everything there checks out its probably a belt or clutch pads.
d) The previous owner told me the electric starter worked however, the battery was low and therefore was not working at the time. All the lights, and horn seem to work fine on the battery. Kick start works fine, but it would be nice if the electric starter worked too! If the battery has enough powr to blink the blinkers it should operate the starter.
e) Does anyone know any good shops in Seattle to have a tune-up done? How much should a tune-up run for a spree? It will cost way to much, anybody with 2 thumbs that can outsmart a monkey can wrench on a spree.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

See bolded. Read up in the tech doc section lots of good infoi on carb cleaning and plug chops.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

Hi Bruck,
Hey welcome, and great deal on the Spree! I live just north of Seattle, would be happy to meet you to look over your scooter. PM me if you like. You will probably not need a scooter shop tune up by the time you read the replies, FAQ's and other info from the folks here.
