No spark!
I have a 1987 Spree, with no spark. I have checked the connections, and they all seem fine. From the service manual I have decided that is either the CDI or the alternator. I do not know how to test the CDI, so should I just replace it and see if the problem goes away? Or does anyone know how to test the CDI? Does anyone know what the CDI even does?

The service manual has some checks for the CDI, alternator and coil. If you can run the tests, it could help you isolate the problem.
The CDI accumulates the charge from the spark exciter coil in your stator. There is a trigger coil also on your stator which connects to the CDI. From the trigger coil pulse, There can be components to adjust spark advance vs rpm. At the correct point in time, the capacitor energy is dumped to the primary of the external spark coil.
