85 Spree, test bed for mods

Hello all,

Just picked up a 1985 Spree. Took a little fiddling to get it running.





Tops out at about 30 mph, just like you would expect. I'm working on a stock muffler for it. The idea is to start with a box stock Spree and try various performance mods. Since I'm basically cheap, I'll focus on the easy and inexpensive ones. The goal is to make a solid 40 mph without spending a bunch of money. After all the cheap and easy stuff I may get crazy but I'll start easy.

Once I get the stock pipe rounded up I'll take the Spree and my GPS out to my secret testing location and do some acceleration runs to establish a base line. After each mod I will make another set of test runs to compare.

It's a piece of rubbery foam kind of stuff velcroed on. It does work and doesn't fall off so I can't complain too much. I think I'll save my money for important things, like stuff to make it go faster.

I'm about ready to go looking for wing nuts and bolts for the body panels. I expect to be taking them on and off a lot.

Metric wingnuts are a PIA to find.

When I was wrenching on mine all the time, I just left the sides and rack off, with just the seat attached. Actually think I left the floorpan off too. Saves mass.

Aco sells the metric cap nuts. the caps are a little bit taller, thats all.

Cap nuts in metric I've found, and have a little pile for replacement... wingnuts are harder.

i gave up on caps, most of my stuff is held on with normal nuts

Hey is that custom exhaust on that thing, notice the J-pipe that goes to the cylinder "hint" thats a major restriction so before you start drilling holes in the end of the exhaust you may want to cut & splice one from an elite-s = instant power.

The exhaust it a piece of junk I threw together till I get something better. I'm working on a stock muffler for base line testing then I'll go to a tuned pipe.

Hang on, I'll do my best. I am a bit slow but I'll get there. Start with the normal things. Decarbon the muffler and exhaust port. Make sure your belt is in good shape. Check tire pressure.

Here is a bit of trivia for you.

This is the displacment of a Spree with a stock piston and various overbores. As you can see even the biggest piston I've found so far (3mm) only adds about 14% to the displacment. This by it's self will not add much power.

But, once you have the cylinder off to do the overbore you can work on the exhaust port. That should make more differance. My friend the old school two stroke guy keeps telling me that overbore isn't the answer. Porting and pipes is where the power is.

One thing the overbore will do if the piston crown is the same is increase the compression ratio. This will add some power.

if your gonna spend a few hundred dollars you might as well buy a different motor. I got my se50 with everything i needed for 200. And thats high priced. Just the stock se50 is faster than the spree motor will ever be

You missed the point. I'm going to take the wimpiest, can't do nothin' to make it go fast scooter and kick some booty with it. My point of view is that if you take a faster scooter motor and put it in a Spree frame you don't have a Spree any more. You have an Elite or whatever with a Spree frame.

BTW, just how fast is your stock se50?
