Piston Ring Size

Post by jhwnissan »

I have a noob type question. As I am rebuilding my first motor I would like to know if I have a honed out cylinder... do I need bigger rings, or bigger rings and a bigger piston. Also, are there really 3 rings instead of just two? I saw an illustration with what looked like a third ring below the bottom one on the piston. Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated since I have a crappy motor with really worn rings. Also, any tricks to rebuilding? I made a gasket set and whatnot, just want to make sure I do not miss anything.

If you have no measuring tools around but can get it to a machine shop, let them measure it. You can probably see a 0.5mm (2nd) overbore with just a scale.

There are 2 rings, the bottom ring sees a vacuum and there is a wavy spring underneath it.

In the technical doc section there is a doc on replacing your rings.
