Muffler 'ruined' - which would be easier.

Does your Spree/Elite already run great, and you're trying to make it quicker/faster? Need a monster motor swap? Discuss your ideas here.

Muffler 'ruined' - which would be easier.

Post by Saltisall »

Last week I drilled a 3/8 inch hole in the first baffle of my muffler (87 spree non-Iowa)

I don't mind the louder sound, as it gained a few miles an hour. However my girlfriend (THE SCOOTERS OWNER) hates it....a lot.... doesn't even want to ride it any more.

So I need advice, would be be easier to find a replacement and swap ou (I've already posted in the parts forum)

Or have someone cut the thing open and weld a bit of metal over the hole I've created?

Please help if you can.

Cut n weld is easy with a cutoff wheel and a wire welder.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

If you reached it with a drill bit, you can reach it with a self-tapping screw. Get one at just about any hardware store, coat the threads and bottom of the head with high temperature RTV, screw it in the hole you drilled, and let it sit overnight. The hole is gone, and it's easily reversible, in case she is gone!

Getting a screw through the outlet pipe could be a challenge. I'm not sure that the head of a 3/8" screw would fit. Check out my post about my Spree test bed. I've got pictures of a cut open muffler from when I welded up one that had been drilled.

Let's give it a try, how hard could it be?

Full face helmet doubles as sound protection.
