no start / no spark

Post by evilone »

First of all my battery is crap and I don't want to buy one right now. I just kick start it. I know the electric start works since I can jump the elite from good battery. Today I have no start, I tried to jump it and use electric start...nothing. I checked spark at plug using kick start and nothing. My question is...would whatever controls electric start cause no spark? I doubt it but you never know. What service manual should I look at for diagnosing? 1988-1993 sa50 or 1988-2002 sa50? I have the 87 elite se50.

Wiring is all the same.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

The starter circuit - relay, wiring are independent from the ignition.

Only common point is the ignition switch. But even then the contacts are different. When the IGN is in the OFF position a separate set of contacts are closed to shut off the spark.

Try running the resistance checks for coil, cdi and stator.

The key will fall out of cylinder so I just keep ignition on and use kill switch. I went a week without riding it and didn't have time to diagnose. Luckily I remembered I turned the ignition switch off for the first time in forever, at least I didn't get too involved in diagnosing it!!
