Honda Spree and Elite 50 Forums

I recently got an 87 Spree, motor was apart, pistion burnt up from running it out of oil.

I bought a new piston kit and bearing , honed the cylinder(within spec) and put it back together. I've been trying to get it to run, cleaned the carb, cleaned the fuel vacuum valve, cleaned strainers, and put new fuel and oil in as well as a new plug.

Compression tested at 90psi, could this be brought up by shaving the head as described here, http://m.1asphost.com/SpreeRepairing/speed.htm, or is there a better way of doing it, or maybe is this not my problem at all?

I've been trying to follow the troubleshooting outline in the back of the service manual, but do not have all of the tools they describe, nor am I an expert of 2-strokes.

Any help very appriciated by this newb!!

Its at 90 because it has a freshly honed bore and rings, dump a tablespoon of oil down the plug hole
crank it over without a plug for 10 seconds
repalce the plug
Put your fingers over the air intake holes on the airbox lid and hit the start button, I bet it will roar to life. For the first tank of gas CONSTANTLY vary RPMs, medium city traffic while revving at stoplights should do the trick.

Oil in, cranked, spark plug, fingers over holes, crank...ROAR!...bleeeehhh

FIngers over holes, Crank...ROAR, played with the carb while feathering the throttle, and no mercy. The thing will not idle, and now it won't fire at all. I tried the oil trick again and it didnt even seem to work, it will sputter but not fire.

I have tried all I can think of to get the thing to idle, but once it came down from blasting it wouldn't recover...THOUGHTS?

Do you have the airbox connected to the carb? It won't idle (or run well) without it.

How long did it sit broken since it last ran? Does the carb need cleaned?

Yes, it is connected and tightened in, as well as being sealed all the way around...

Clean carb, check petcock operation, check float level.

just re-cleaned the carb, how do i check float operation, carb isn't back on yet if that helps...

Back together, starts on the first crank, or at least it did yesterday, even after a 2 hour lecture, but it does not idle worth a darn. Air screw is out one and a half turns, idle screw is all the way in, and it still bogs out with the brakes on. I am starting to think the clutch(es) are worn beyond normal life(I cant get up hills, although I do weigh 215#, which is probably pushing the limits anyway) but if i let it sit with the brake unlocked and the wheel is able to spin, it'll take off like crazy, one little tweek of the idle screw and it bogs out, and with the wheel on the ground, or the brake locked, she'll only idle about ten seconds...thoughts?

Clean the carb, turning the stop out slows it down.

Sounds like an air leak in the intake system, probably after the carb.
