Strange Squeak When Scooter is Moving

My Elite 50 will start up and run fine, but if I run her down the street she starts to squeak loudly near the business end w/in about .10 mile. I replaced the gear oil and inspected the belt which is fairly new and in excellent shape. After the scooter stops moving the squeak gradually subsides, and the engine continues to run normally. When the squeak hits, the scooter's speed drops off dramatically.

My first guess is the clutch is shot. Anybody able to confirm or suggest something else based on my description?

Thanks,

Tim

It continues to squeek after you stop? This eliminates brakes, wheels, and transmission gears. The parts still moving are stuff attached to the crankshaft, the belt, and the clutch. The clutch sounds like a good place to look. Since the engine slows down when it starts squeeking something is binding and wearing fast. It will get easy to find soon as it is likely to destroy it's self pretty quickly.

Thanks, that's where I'll start.

Yes, the squeak continues but considerably quieter for a couple minutes. Until I rev it up again and get the rear wheel turning, then it starts squeaking again.

I would suspect a marginal belt.
