First I gotta say Great Site!
I just stumbled across this site as I was getting some info about my first scooter I picked up a couple weeks ago. I found a lot of good stuff here!

The scooter I just picked up is a 1988 Honda Elite LX that has been sitting for 10 years, it had a lot of sun fading and was filthy but is all complete and missing nothing! So far I got it running pretty good and a fresh coat of paint and a couple of new parts, now it is looking sweet!

I am already bitten by the bug and took it all down again this weekend to do some tranny upgrades, 35mph was cool for the first week now I am going for faster.

BTW, this is what I ordered.... Keli Vari pulley, 7.7g rollers, new bando belt, and 1k springs. With all of this plus the UNI I already put on it, what do you think it will go after? I heard 42-45mph... what do you think?

Congratulations on your "new" Elite.

The Keli pulley means speeds around 40-ish is likely. A bigger tire is an easy upgear, then maybe 45. Metropolitan tubeless rims mounting a 90/90 or 3.50 (depending on the brand) bolt right on.

I have read several of your posts and used many of your ideas and pointers. I think it was your post that got me thinking about a 3.5 tire, so I went to the local bike shop, they had 1 3.0 and 1 3.5 so I had them put the 3.0 on the front stock rim and the 3.5 on the rear stock rim. When I got them home (Last night) the rear is a really tight fit, it looks like it will rub at the front especially when I depress the shocks. I have about a 1/4-3/8 " clearance at the front of the rear tire while on the kickstand and it only has about 10lb of air in it, do you think it will rub? Could an '88 be different? It is also a little wider but I don't think that is a problem...Any ideas?

Only way to tell is to pump it up and try to ride it. It may get shorter as it "plumps".

The AF 05 engine cases are all identical AFAIK - what fits my '87 Aero should fit your '88 Elite. Tires are different - even when the same size is stamped on the sidewalls - from different brands. I've never installed a 3.50. Others have and say they fit. I'm using a slightly wider but shorter 90/90x10 from IRC. Metropolitan rim = tubeless, too!
