Can you really use a gas grill to decarbon the exhaust and if so how? What temp needs to be reached?

I prefer a campfire, you need to reach temperatures that will turn carbon to ash.

Plugging the muffler end and filling it with draino is another option, lye eats carbon.

Kenny,

Could you possibly provide a step by step for the lye?

Plug the end of muffler and fill with draino or other "lye" substance and wait. That's it, how long you wait depends on how much time you have. I'd go a few days or more.

Dont go too long or you will eat the muffler, Put the highly caustic mess in a heavy duty container, seal it in concrete, and drop it in the ocean near some nuclear waste.

I destroyed the baffles in a muffler last summer with lye. Lye and aluminum do not mix, kids. Ended up having to buy a NOS muffler off eBay, works great.

So, about how long should you leave the lye in? In approximate hours?

I thought the muffler is all steel excluding some glass packing in the down tube end? Maybe you had some bad corrosion held by carbon?
