SE50 Spree project...

OK, First of all I would like to thank everyone that have been extremely helpful with giving me advice and help sourcing parts for my SE50 motor. I am very grateful :)

The purpose of this thread is for advice on installation and break in procedures you recommend for the parts I have, and maybe ideas on what other parts I need to get. I'm still kinda a Noob when it comes to these things so bear with me. I feel comfortable with installing the parts because I've taken enough motors apart in the past. I would love to just throw on the parts and ride but I know that isn't the smart thing to do. I need to make sure I do it right the first time.

As of now, here is a list of parts I should be receiving by the end of the week and parts I already have in my possesion.

Polini Contessa BBK
Daytona Max PSI exhaust
AF28 Carb and intake manifold with 3 reed setup
Oko variator with an assortment of weights ranging from 6g-11g
New Bando Belt
K&N Pod style filter
"racing CDI" (I know it just looks cool  )

Here is some info Wheelman gave me for installing the Polini...

Loctite is not recommended and will mess up your torque values unpredictably. Just be careful with the wrist pin clips. Make absolutely sure they're locked into their grooves all the way around. Legs point straight down. Honda and Polini recommend torques that seemed absurdly low. Maybe for brand-new parts but I applied their 9 pounds and it leaked. I raised it to 15-16 in stages. Don't overdo it, they can break.

I ran the stock carb with the main jet that came with the Polini initially. It was fine until I monkeyed with the intake and pipe, then ended up with a 96.5 to stay cool enough. Ran great, but I can't leave well enough alone. :) The Arreche carb is currently fitted with a 100 main and once again the plug color is very reassuring. Can't help you much with the Super Dio carb. I would recommend you find a CHT and keep an eye on it for temps exceeding 400. The TinyTach has come in handy too.
As for all the other installations it seems pretty straight forward. What will give me trouble is the tuning.

What weights should I start with on the Oko variator?

My stock carb has a main jet of 82 but the AF28 carb has a main jet (75)and slow jet(?). Should I up the main to 82 since my stock carb was running that? Or does the larger AF28 carb compensate for more fuel right off the bat? Should I be upjetting the slow jet as well? Where is a good place to source these jets besides the dealer?

How should I break in the Polini?

Should I continue running the BR6 plug or should I change it to BR4 or BR8?

Here are a couple of other factors that probably need to go into consideration:

I would like to acheive around 50mph
I weigh 270lbs
I live in the desert which is fairly dry most of the time.
Temperature is usually between 70-95 degrees

Thanks in advance,

Brad

Brad the Cubed axt about toonage:

9s for first tankful or 2. Keeps revs lower. Easy on the throttle.

Can't extrapolate jet sizes from one carb to another. Ax Sanjuro?
How should I break in the Polini?
Use a 20-pound sledge. No, Ha-ha! :) I kid you!. 2 tanks with a little extra oil and a fondling throttle hand.
Should I continue running the BR6 plug or should I change it to BR4 or BR8?
Only reason not to run an 8 is if it tends to foul. On the break-in a 6 might actually be better, but the 8 is extra insurance for long WOT episodes in hot climes. I strongly advise against a 4 in your area until the next Ice Age.

Brad,

The Polini bbk came with an extra jet for the Dio carburetor. I don't know how the Daytona exhaust is going to affect your jetting, but try the larger supplied jet.

what cable are you using with that dio carb? is it the one with the larger bell and mounting flange? are you doing the gears as well? should be a monster with stock gears!!! i would definitely upjet from what polini supplies, especially with a chamber exhaust. i have found, predictably, that a bpr7hs is a perfect medium to the detonation prone bpr6hs, and the fouling bpr8hs. who woulda thunk? also, the head bolts should be lubed with motor oil or even better, moly assembly lube. they say that a lot of the force needed to torque a bolt is to overcome friction, if you use a moly lube, you get more accurate torquing. this thing should rip!!! 50 should be easy, that pipe is a high rpm screamer, i know firsthand! you should be doing 60 with gears...

I'm using the stock SE50 cable, the 2 wire one which also controls the oil pump.
It is that carb that uses the larger bell and mounting flange off of the JDM Dio. Thats why I was trying to remove the cap from my throttle cable but If I can't get it off then I may have to get the single throttle dio cable and eliminate the oil pump all together. I may have to do that anyways and run premix because the manifold doesnt have any vacuum ports at all unless I thread a port in there as Wheelman advised me to do. He says it aint that hard.

I would love to do the gears as well in the future, but as for now I know I have my hands full with what I got so far. Maybe by that time someone would have made a detailed write up for the dio gears in the se50. Did you already do that to your scoot?

Redlands isnt too far from me, its in the I.E. correct? I think maybe one day I could meet you and we could roll around town (if its okay with you). That would be cool.

Thanks for the tips on the plug and the assembly lube, I'll definetely give that a shot :)

heck yes! wanna go to atwater for some polini challenge? malossi still makes and stocks the gears. im using the nb50 throttle cable, the one that clips in, the dio carb looks like it uses a cable that slides in. the sa50 dio cable has no splitter for the oil pump? i do so like not having to premix....

Stock cable is a no go  I see premix in my near future

eh, thats the safest way to go with a larger displacement...just a pain in the * on long rides, have to carry a measuring cup and oil!

I work in a lab so I can get small bottles with the right amount of oil pre-weighed in there so it shouldnt be too bad. How many ounces should I run per tankful?

by Wheelman-111
Greetings:

Not per tankful unless you drain it dry every time. That's no good, you'll be pushing it to the filling station.

Convert gallons to ounces by multiplying 0.XX gallons by 128. Divide that by 32 (If that's the ratio you wish to run...) and that gives you the Floo-Wid Ounces of oil to add.

Say you add 0.5 gallons. That gives 64 ounces. Divvy by 32 and you add 2 ounces to that tank. If you want to run 50 or 20 to one, it's the same process.

yea so for every .25gal of gas you put 1oz. of oil

I received the Polini BBK yesterday but it didn't come with any instructions. Can anyone hook me up with some detailed instructions?

Edit: Got them from DayWOT
