Total Noob w/ some questions (belt and oil)

Post by stooley13 »

Hey everyone. I just acquired two 1986 Honda Sprees from my brother in law that have been sitting for 10 years. I've read some threads on getting in back running and on top of the carb cleaning, fuel tank cleaning/rebuild, line changes (oil and gas), new spark plug, new battery, a tablespoon of oil down the piston, tires and tubes etc...I 100% know I'll have to replace the drive belts.

I have read on here that the OEM is 628 x 11.4 x 30 mm and that some have swapped out those belts for 1/2" top width 24" cog belts because they are easier to find. I haven't seen any results from that swap though so I was wondering if I should suck up the waiting time and just order OEM or if it would be worth it to go to AutoZone, Pep Boys, NAPA or a hardware store to get the 1/2" belt today. Is there a BIG difference in performance from OEM to the 1/2" belt?

Another thing I've been looking for is some GN2...I can't find it locally but have found some Amsoil Dominator does anyone have any oil suggestions at all?

Thanks for your time and I'll post some pictures of the work. I took the week off next week to start working on the Sprees and I'm really excited to get them running again!

Dominator is good for premix but not for injection

if you have pepboys closeby they sell basic castrol 2t oil and it works great on a budget, i run it in every injected bike. gn2 isn't that great imo
projects galore :nerd:

I have 5 gallons of AmsOil two stroke injector oil thanks to a buddy of mine who bought a 55 gallon drum for his snowmobiles. I've ran it in everything I've owned two stroke for the last 3 months or so, it's good stuff.

However, it's expensive. My buddy paid somewhere's around $700 for the barrel. I got 5 gallons for $20, which is dirt cheap if you ask me.

Greetings:

41 Percent of Forum respondents choose GN-2. Honda dealers who do not keep it in stock can get it. Honda engineers specified the formula and evidently believed it best, at least in stock applications, for Honda 2-strokes. That's good enough for me and the other 40%.

I've owned a number of two cycle devises through the years, motorboats, chainsaws, weedeaters, cycles and now scooters. Each has advocated their own oil. I wonder who designs these various formulas? Don't you imagine it's the oil companies who have the chemists and engineers who do that? Then motor companies have their label put on it.

Could be wrong, but a good trustable namebrand, distinguishing between pre-mix and injection, should work well. I've been using some outboard (injection) oil that I picked up in an auction. So far so good, no indication of problems. My son in law is a MODOT mechanic and has several years experience racing 2 strokers. He recommends Castrol.

Actually Amsoil Dominator can be used for injection systems as well.

"Provides excellent protection at 50:1 pre-mix or in injection system" - Source http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/tdr.aspx

I won't go into too much about the differences in oil but mostly all can work as long as you have the jetting correct, you should be fine.
