I think an excellent place to start is from burnt_toast's post on upgrading on a budget. In that thread you can find several ideas to get to 50 & much more in stages. Posters in that thread also cover minimal changes to get to 50 or so.

yeah check that thread out for some info

for $130 budget, I would:

9:1 gears $70
Keli variator or similar $48
plus a roller pack

you'll do 45-50mph fairly easy, get great gas mileage

not quite 55mph, but gotta pay to play if you want to go faster ;)

alright 9:1 gears and the keli variator seems to be the popular and cheap answer. do i need anything else? everything i have is stock and im assuming if i buy new parts, i would need even more parts to keep my bike healthy

you could opt for the japan rear pulley drive/front face/boss/ bando belt, this should get a 60mph stock sleeper, if you know to set it up..

This is the Japan zx trans which you can convert to the U.S. version, vt cycles has a good deal on these parts, you will have to shave the high spots on the case so the belt can clear...

What model Kymco does that variator go to. Where can I find one new and what is the order number?

I just recently ordered and installed 9:1 gears in my 01 elite sr 50 , i also have a keli variator/high speed pulley. it gets my 235 pounds to 45mph.maybe faster once i lose my beer belly and/or get my clutch springs back to stock. i have done 55 mph on some big downhills. i bought the gears through vtcycles.com for $50.00 (best price around) and bought the keli variator from daywot on ebay for $35.00. vtcycles.com is very reasonable on the shipping if i might add.
