Spree won't throttle up!! HELP!!

Ok I recently purchased an '87 spree.
To help out with some air flow I took off the stock air box/filter and replaced it with a cone-shape air filter instead.
I also drilled a 3/8" size hole in the front side of the stock muffler so air could flow straight out of the first chamber, I also have the original exhaust hole there as well.
After all this I started the spree up and it idles fine, I took it for a drive and it has good pick-up in the first 1/4 throttle. If I give it anymore than 1/4 throttle it just dies. When I let off again it's ok until I try to throttle it up again and it bogs down tremedously and dies.
Could this be an air/fuel ratio issue? Am I getting too much air? too much fuel? How do I correct this?
PLEASE HELP ME!!! THANKS!!

Where exactly did you drill the hole in the exhaust? The muffler on that 2 stroke engine plays a pretty vital role as far as combustion goes. Not really a good idea to go drilling holes in it

I drilled it on the bottom of the muffler...about 3 inches from where the tubing meets the muffler, but I made sure it was still in the first chamber. With the two mods I did (air filter and hole drilled) I'm getting more air in, and more exhaust out....it has to be a fuel issue i'm thinking.....

I'd say that wasn't a particularly helpful modification. Also, I suspect the air filter 'upgrade' isn't aiding the bike's performance much either.
From what you describe, the problem MIGHT stem from a high speed jet malfunction. That's like a wardrobe malfunction without the 'tit'iliation.
Suggestions:
A: Remove carb; clean it well. Pay particular attention to the so-called 'emulsion tube' in the jet. That li'll bad boy has a habit of attracting 'glern' in its 'gills' which results in rather bad behavior when the throttle's increased. Also, the ByStarter bowl port might be clogged as well. An ant's-anus diameter is sufficient room to host all manner of unwanted macroscopic crap.
B: Bite the bullet and get a HondaSan-proper air filter. These can be obtained for around <>$6.00 US from various online wholesalers. Lightly oil the new filter and install it in the factory-approved filter box. This unit's located beneath the Pilot Derrierre Support (seat), aft of the Power Storage Device (battery), and inboard of the Rear Decorative Panels. Ensure the filter box's top is latched securely and not sucking air.
C: Now the hard part. I strongly suggest patching the surgical intrusion you metted out on your muffler. Failing that, you might be better served getting another unmolested muffler someplace. Then, if you're moved to drill something, knock out the washers INSIDE the muffler's guts.
These are just thoughts off the top of my head. They often rise to that level because there's not much beneath 'em but hot air.

The spree needs its stock unmodified airbox to function properly! There is not a breathing problem on the intake side, sprees are slow because they have fixed gearing. The muffler issue might be OK, after you get the airbox setup again, do a plug chop.
