Honda Spree and Elite 50 Forums

I have a 1986 Spree NQ50.
It is in nice condition with 1800KM and is used as a "pit" scooter.
My problem is. yesterday it would not start with the starter,
kicked started OK. at the same time the horn and tail light
didn't work. the battery is fully charged. (new battery)
The battery connections are clean, the fuse by the battery is OK.
Is there another fuse somewhere?
Would appreciate any help.

did any of that stuff work when you kick started it and set on center stand and rev it up??
the small genterator will make things work but you have to have the bike running.

If they did work your battery is toast (yes even a new battery can get toasted now and then. It
may just need to be removed then charged real good. Or..........

My Aero is having the same type of problem. The starter button is linking to the brake to make sure you don't start up and go racing off out of control. If the starter button or the brake switch are not making the conection the starter wont fire. I had to order a used settup from Ebay to replace mine. I am hoping it will get here this week.

That is what I thought it was, the day before every thing worked OK
The only thing that works NOW when it's running is the head light.

I charged the battery overnight and I just hooked up a 12v compressor to it and it's fine
and stayed at 12.7 volts

There is a fuse, inline with the ignition switched power. If this fuse is blown, there will be no horn, tail light/brake light with a good battery.
Also, there will be no power to the starter relay, when the 'start' button is activated. It's good you tested the battery with a load, and that your new battery is still ok.

Some ideas for things to check:

Basically, do the troubleshooting to the the brake light power working, then trace into the starter button/relay/starter if needed.

1. Re-check fuse. They will often blow if battery connections are accidentally reversed. And if blown, double check battery connection polarity
2. Check for broken wires at the battery terminals, the small red wire is what runs to the ign switch, then to the tail light etc...
3. Measure with a multimeter voltage on either side of the ignition switch, with the switch 'on'. The contacts in the IGN sometimes go bad.

It's 5 megs, so plan on about 1/2 hour across a phone modem.

I went looking for a wire harness problem first.
I uncovered multiple connectors in a cover on the left side in front of the engine.
there were 2 plastic connectors with 2 wires each, and 4 single connectors,
as I was moving them the tail light came on!..I cleaned all the connections
and everything was working the way it should.

I put everything back together as was rechecking everything, as I moved the
steering to the left, the tail light went out...I pulled the front cover off and found,
the wires that go to the horn were too tight and were stretched and shorting out!!
Sooooo, hopefully....that was the problem..

I have had this Spree since new...The only thing I have had to replace is...
One spark plug..and I'm on my 4th battery. These are fabulous little machines..
And I was REALLY happy to find this site...It's fabulous too.
