Help with Spree Piston Ring Install
Posted: Wed May 02, 2012 9:41 pm
I just bought a top end rebuild kit for my 1985 spree. New cylinder, piston, rings, gaskets etc. The rings have no writing on them. I know that the darker thicker ring goes on top per the seller and the fact it will not fit in the bottom groove, and the smaller shiny ring goes in the bottom groove. But........the seller said they also have to be flipped right side up. I am not sure which way that is. They have no markings on them.
It appears to me that each ring has a flat side and a beveled or
tapered side. It is very hard to see, but that's what it looks like.
What I need to know is, does the bevel face up or down? How can I tell
which way the ring faces? Does the bevel face up on BOTH rings? Only
on the top Ring??? I am not sure.
Also, the base gasket provided in the kit appears that it is missing cut-outs where it contacts the base of the cylinder and the top of the crankcase. I think maybe the areas I am talking about are the intake ports??
Anyway, shouldn't these areas be cut out of the base gasket? I have attached a picture of a base gasket that has those areas cut out (you can see them at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions). Mine DOES NOT have the cut out areas. Will mine work? I would think so since it came with the kit. Does anyone have any experience with these Ebay kits?
Lastly, should I smooth the edges of the ports inside the cylinder,or is it necessary?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jeff
