Hello, I’m a new member who recently aquired an 86 Lollipop Green Spree. Its pretty rough but I plan to retore it. I’ve got a lot of experience restoring such things but could still use some help. Does anyone know if the decals for this are availble? Also is there a paint code for the white and green colors. Any other advice would be appreciated.

Jim

Greetings:

Welcome to Honda Spree. You have a rare and worthwhile project to begin with. Pics? (We like pics...) There is (was?) a Member who was making Reproduction stickers for any scooter Honda (and others?) made printed onto adhesive material. His post may be at the top of one of the Forum categories, have a look.

Scooter plastics are ABS, and the color is molded-in through and through. There is a Color Code sticker, look under the saddle on the gas tank. But since the plastic parts were cheap, the intention was to replace, not repair or paint, broken ones. So there may not be a paint you can just buy in a can that'll match perfectly. In any case, be advised that it can be challenging to get paint to stick to this material, especially the stuff of which the floorboards are made. It would be a Minor Miracle to find the plastics in New Old Stock, but you can try to search using the part numbers.

I recommend you keep it as stock as possible. Some mechanical parts are getting tough to find, but someone here always seems to come through. (Except of course for a replacement America Red Elite front cover I'm trying to find...) :)

Thanks for the reply. I knew this was rare which is why I thought it was worthy of a restoration. I can get my local paint store to match the color, he is pretty good at that. I’ll ask him for any advice on painting ABS. Maybe using an epoxy primer.

I’ll look for the posts on decals.

I’m looking forward to the restoration and learning some new skills.

Here are a few pictures of my Spree, actually it will belong to my wife.... It spent its entire life as a pit bike for an NHRA Drag Racer so most of the time it was in the trailer. I suspect it was packed in with other equipment which is why the sides are beat up a bit. I was surprised to find the original owner manual under the seat. It appears to be an "Iowa" version, is that typical?

I also saw a "Color Label". Is NH-138 the paint code for Shasta White/Lollipop Green?

I'm told it was running when it was parked in 2017. I've got a new battery on order and will hopefully getting it running before I tear into it.

NOTE: I'm having trouble posting pictures, I'll get them posted when I figure it out.

"Special Edition" Spree with your 2-tone scheme were sold everywhere.
"Iowa" edition not adding anything to the value or rareness of them.
Iowa edition is restricted, not as fast as the other 49 states.

I can't believe it's been 4 years since my original post on my Lollipop Green Spree. It has been sitting in my basement untouched all this time, other projects always seemed to have priority. But I have finally started the restoration. I think it would be fun and helpful to document the restoration on this forum, so should I post this on "Scooter Showcase" or "Builders Workshop"?

Hey, welcome back! It's up to you at this point. You could add-on to this post for now. We can always make adjustments if needed but the important thing is that you're finally taking on this project! It looks like it's mostly white. Are those the original colors? These are very rare and I don't recall the colors.
Oh the pics need to be re-sized to under 600 KB to post here. Looks like you did already. :thumbwink:

Thanks, I'll take some pics from the last couple of days and continue to post here.

I originally posted that I thought this was an Iowa version, but I don't that's the case. I said that based on what was printed on the cover of the owner's manual which says "Spree / Spree Iowa". I think that indicates the manual applies to either. The CDI module has 5 pins, not 6 so I think that indicates a non-Iowa version. Hopefully someone can comment on that, I'm just learning all this stuff.

I did make sure it started before I started taking it apart which tells me most of the electrical components are good. I don't think the auto petcock is working so just plumbed around it for the test start. I've got a new one on order. The electric start works ok, but the manual kick start needs some attention, probably a good cleaning and lubrication.

My biggest challenge is going to be the body panels. Some are in rough shape and will need some work. Based on what I've been able to find out so far these are ABS plastic which will require proper preparation in order to paint them. Any advice on this would be appreciated. I'm going to talk to the owner of my local paint supplier, who I know well, about what it takes to paint things. I've got the paint codes for both the Shasta white and Lollipop green.

I'm doubtful of finding any decals so I'll probably paint the pin stripes and other green areas and have some decals made for the "Spree" and "Honda" lettering. I think I can make the other small labels. But, If anyone knows where I can get decals, I'd like to know.

So far, I haven't found any major issues, just a lot of cleaning to do.

I never heard back from the eBay seller, but that's ok, I don't think he has what I need.

There appears to be two different types of material used on the body panels. The front fender, front spoiler and the floorboard are the very flexible plastic that has the color through and through as mentioned above. I'm going to talk to my paint guy and see what it will take to restore these.

The side panels and the two handlebar covers are some type of composite material with a color layer on top of the brown composite. One of the handlebar cover pieces was cracked so I'm experimenting with fiberglass cloth and resign to repair it. I sanded down to the brown material on the inside and applied the fiberglass to that. If that holds then I'm going to sand the outside and spray a coat of epoxy primer. If that holds then I treat them like fiberglass panels.

I'm learning as I go......
