Odd problem with scooter #2

I managed to end up with two '86 sprees :D go figure. one of which i've gotten running almost perfectly, the other i just started on today.

the problem i have is that there's a TON of resistance with the head on. if the piston is off, you can grab the starter gear and turn that just fine. with the cylinder and piston on there's some resistance, but, that makes sense because now you're moving some objects. however, when i put the head on and cranked everything down, suddenly there's a ton of resistance when the cylinder is near the top. possible it's while it's on the way down.

what's going on??

thanks guys

Compression?

Normal behavior, read up on how an engine works. If it does crank over easy there is a problem.

it's much more than compression. i talked to someone else who said i could be that the exhaust is clogged up. this would make sense, there's a lot of buildup. i'm going to grill it when i get the chance

..okay? well there's too much back pressure, i know what compression feels like. the starter can't take it, and there's no kick start. any suggestions other than know what an engine is?

Have you loosened or removed muffler to see if it turns over easier? I doubt the muffler is the problem for turning over hard. When i got my spree it turned over fine even though muffler was packed with mud at outlet. If it has that much resistance after putting head on and tightening, i'd have to say piston may be contacting the head :?:

It's not hydro locked is it? My spree oil pump filled the cylinder with oil and it wouldn't turn over. Once I figured it out, things went smoothly

Just a thought, but couldn't the piston rings be a problem. Maybe the previous owner replaced them, and never wore them in? maybe they maybe too over sized?

Oil lock is cured by removing the plug and cranking it over.
